Fault Checking Instruction
Fault Checking Procedure
Check as per the 5 steps as below.
1. Verification of customer dissatisfaction
To conduct the correct repair, the faulty
components of the electric circuit reported by the
customers shall be checked and recorded.
However, it’s disallowed to conduct the
disassembling before determining the cause.
2. Interpretation and analysis of electric
circuit diagram
Based on the system circuit diagram, analyze and
judge the faulty components from the power
supply to earth within the entire electric circuit
and decide the operation method. If it’s
impossible to decide the operation method, refer
to the operation reference manual of electric
circuit. In addition, check other circuits shared by
the faulty circuit. Such as, check the shared
circuit not checked in the 1
st
step, referring to the
shared system circuit (fuse, earth, open-end, etc.)
in the circuit diagram. If the shared circuit
functions normally, the fault lies in the circuit
itself. If several circuits have problems, the fault
may lies in broken fuse or faulty earth.
3. Checking of circuit and components
Conduct the checking of 2
nd
step with tester. The
effective fault diagnosis should be of simple and
logical operation procedure. Determine the fault
cause by means of the fault diagnosis procedure
or the fault diagnosis table and check from the
most possible cause and the location with the
easiest accessibility.
4. Troubleshooting
Find out the fault and conduct the necessary
repair.
5. Confirmation of normal functioning of
circuit
At completion of the repair, to confirm that the
fault is resolved, rechecking shall be conducted.
If the fault lies in broken fuse, all circuits sharing
this fuse shall be checked.
Fault Diagnosis Equipment
Voltmeter and testing lamp
The testing lamp or voltmeter can be used to
check the circuit status and the testing lamp can
be used to check the presence of voltage. The
testing lamp consists of one pair of wires and one
12V bulb. During the checking, contact one wire
to the earth and another wire to certain measuring
point. If the lamp lights up, it indicates the
presence of voltage at such measuring point.
Notice
When checking the voltage of electronic
control module, such as checking the voltage of
engine control module (ECM) used in the
electronic fuel injection engine, make sure to
check with the digital voltmeter with 10M
resistance value or above. Using the testing
lamp to check the module circuit may damage
the internal circuit. Therefore, it’s absolutely
prohibited to use the testing lamp to check the
electric circuit.
The voltage is used as per the same way of the
testing lamp and the only difference lies that the
testing lamp can only be used to check the
presence of voltage and the voltmeter can be used
to check the voltage value.
Powered Testing Lamp and Ohmmeter
Use the powered testing lamp or ohmmeter to
check the conductivity of the circuit. The
powered testing lamp consists of the bulb,
battery, and two wires. The bulb lights up when
two wires are connected. Before the checking,
disconnect the cathode wire of the battery and
pull out the fuse of such circuit.
Testing lamp

14
Notice
Using the powered testing lamp to check the
module circuit may damage the internal
circuit. Therefore, it’s absolutely prohibited to
use the powered testing lamp to check the
electric circuit.
The ohmmeter is used as per the same way of the
powered testing lamp and the only difference lies
that the ohmmeter can indicate the resistance
value. The low resistance value indicates the
good conductivity performance.
The semi-conductor units must be checked with
the digital multimeter with 10M resistance value
or above. When checking the resistance with
digital multimeter, disconnect the cathode wire of
the battery, or it will obtain the wrong resistance
value. When measuring the resistance with
ohmmeter, the diode or semi-conductor units in
the circuit may influence the measurement. To
check whether the unit is influencing the
measurement, measure one value first and then
change the polarity before measuring again. If
two measurements are not equal, it indicates that
the semi-conductor unit is influencing the
measurement.
Jumper Cable with Fuse
Use the jumper cable to check the open-loop
circuit.
The jumper cable is one checking tool to be series
connected with the wire being tested.
The jumper cable can be used along with most
wire connectors, without damaging the wire
connectors.
Warning
To protect the circuit being checked, never use
the jumper cable with fuse in excess of its
rated value nor use the jumper cable to
substitute the output or input signal while the
control module (such as ECM, TCM) is
connected.
Short-Circuit Detector
The short-circuit detector can find out the
location of short-circuit. The short-circuit
detector generates the magnetic pulse while
checking the circuit with short-circuit, so as to
find out the location of short-circuit.
Fault Checking
1. Voltage Checking
Check one point for presence of voltage. When
checking one terminal of the wire connector, it
may test from the back of the wire connector,
instead of disconnecting the wire.
When checking the voltage with testing lamp
or voltmeter, connect the cathode wire of the
tester with the battery cathode.
Connect another wire of the testing lamp or
voltmeter to the location to be measured.
When checking with testing lamp, the
illumination of the testing lamp indicates the
presence of voltage. When checking with
voltmeter, it indicates the fault of circuit if the
reading of the voltmeter is lower than the
specified value by more than 1V.
Powered testing lamp

2. Power-on Testing
Disconnect the cathode of the battery.
Connect one wire of the powered testing
lamp or ohmmeter to the location to be
checked. When using the ohmmeter,
short-circuit two wires of the ohmmeter to
reset the ohmmeter.
Connect another wire of the tester to another
terminal of the load to be checked.
The illumination of powered testing lamp
indicates the conductivity. When the
ohmmeter is used, the very small or near
zero reading of the ohmmeter indicates the
excellent conductivity.
3. Short-Circuit Testing
Disconnect the cathode of the battery.
Connect one wire of the powered testing
lamp or ohmmeter to one terminal of the
fuse.
Connect another wire of the powered testing
lamp or ohmmeter to the earth.
Check in turn from the harness near the fuse
case. Repeat above operation, till it’s about
15cm away from the powered testing lamp
or ohmmeter.
The illumination of powered testing lamp or
the reading of ohmmeter indicates that the
short-circuit lies between this part and the
earth.

4. Checking with Short-Circuit Detector
Pull out the broken fuse and disconnect the
cathode of battery.
Connect the short-circuit detector to the
terminal of fuse.
Turn on the switch to check the circuit.
When the short-circuit detector moves to the
location of short-circuit, the magnetic pulse
is generated between the fuse and the
short-circuit location.
From the fuse case, move the short-circuit
detector gradually along the wire. Once the
short-circuit detector is between the fuse and
the short-circuit location, the pointer will
move following the size of the pulse current.
Once the short-circuit detector moves
beyond the short-circuit location, the pointer
will stop.
Checking Precautions
